Fielding an Outfield Fly

Ready Position
While infielders want to stay low to the ground, an outfielder has more reaction time and more space to cover. Stand with feet slightly wider than shoulder width apart with your weight in the balls of your feet. Glove should be at waist level and your focus should be on the batter. Start thinking about what you will do with the ball if it comes to you and who you will back up if it doesn't.

Once the ball is hit, don't react with an immediate step toward the batter. This is a common mistake among younger outfield players.
Making the Catch
Don't run with your glove in the air trying to blindly catch the ball. Run toward the ball with your glove at your side. Try to set up so you will be behind the ball when you catch it with the ball on the throwing arm side of the body. Catch the ball between the chest and the eyes and catch it on the throwing arm side of the body.

Keep your eyes on the ball and watch it enter the glove. Immediately cover with the throwing hand.

More detailed information on fielding a fly ball can be found in the Summer 2004 issue of Fastpitch Forever. Copies are still available in the shopping section of this site. Check it out!
